What Geology Taught Me About Menopause

You’ve done everything right. Built a successful life, held everything together at home, at work, all without missing a beat. Then the ground starts shifting - and nothing you’ve relied on seems to work anymore.

You’re waking up in the middle of the night feeling anxious, drenched in sweat. You’re completely exhausted, no matter how long you sleep. Things you used to shake off with no problem suddenly start driving you crazy.

You power through, as expected, with no relief in sight. Out of frustration, you begin scouring the internet for direction, only to become overwhelmed with all the chatter, but none of it helps.


The messages coming at women in midlife arrive from every direction, and most of them are wrong. On one side, doctors may say, “You’re fine, you’re just getting older”. Meanwhile, on the other side, the mainstream wellness industry pushes “anti-aging” and “restoring your youth.” Groundbreaking products that will “fix your problem,” implying we’re broken somehow.

The noise is deafening. It leaves you feeling defeated, often causing more confusion, frustration, and exhaustion. This conditioning, left unchecked, can lead to self-doubt or worse, shrinking.

We begin questioning our intuition at a time when internally we sense something powerful is happening under the surface. It isn’t failure; we aren’t breaking.


When the ground feels like it's shifting beneath me, as it often does in midlife, the instinct is to find solid footing and wait for the shaking to stop. If I push against it, maybe I won’t lose myself while the dust settles. But what if the shifting isn't a problem to solve?

Consider for a moment what’s happening in the natural world around us. Underneath the surface, processes like plate tectonics and metamorphism are reshaping the planet from below. While weathering, erosion, and deposition are changing the landscape above.

Tectonic shifts beneath the surface may appear like the earth is breaking, but the earth is reorganizing under sustained pressure into something structurally new.

Metamorphism, the extreme transformation in response to changes in temperature, pressure, and fluids, is creating something new without melting the original rock.

Weathering, erosion, and deposition are reshaping the landscape not through failure, but through rain, wind, and ice, creating new landscapes or slowly revealing what was always underneath.

These and many other earth processes occur continuously under unpredictable conditions, yet somehow there’s a natural rhythm to it. An underlying knowing that understands what to do.

This shifting and reorganizing is exactly what’s happening to us as women navigating midlife. The chaotic nature and unpredictability of transition has felt overwhelming at times, but I remind myself that I’m changing phases into a new expression of who I’ve always been.

Through this lens, I see that the chaos isn't a malfunction; it's a complex system doing precisely what it's designed to do. I'm not falling apart. I'm reorganizing. The system knows what it's doing, and so do I, if I stop fighting it long enough to listen.


The path through menopause hasn’t been linear. It’s been more like a slow accumulation of ebbs and flows, something I’m still experiencing even on the other side.

In the past, when I’d lost consistency in my fitness or focus on my health, I knew what to do to get things back on track to feel more like myself again. And it usually didn’t take long, since wellness has always been foundational in my life. But this was different.

At first, I did what I’d always done: I buckled down and adjusted. But over time, it got harder and harder to push through and bounce back. Symptoms began piling on, only this time, nothing worked, even though I was doing everything right.

Frustrated, I threw myself into the science of menopause and started researching everything I could about what was happening and what I could do about it. The more I learned, the more I realized I needed a different approach. Not surrender, but a shift in my perspective.

I began noticing parallels between the changes I was experiencing and the earth systems I’d come to know so well as a geologist. While it wasn’t a solution, this reframe offered me a way of seeing the midlife transition through a different lens - a practical way to organize the chaos. I’m not broken; I’m transforming.


That geological reframe needed a map. The navigational system that emerged is The Elemental Framework™ - five elements acting as a container.

  • Earth is the foundation - structure, stability, nourishment.

  • Water offers stillness and release.

  • Air ushers in clarity for the expansion of landscapes, both internal and external.

  • Fire provides the spark and movement for renewal and strength.

  • Spirit is the thread that weaves through the entire cycle, binding everything together and marking each transition.

These elements move as a living cycle, running with the seasons - and like the seasons, they aren’t linear. They meander, overlap, and circle back.

For women navigating midlife, this cycle offers something the wellness industry rarely does - a reorientation toward transformation rather than restoration.
